The Chapel (#16) of St. Elizabeth’s located at 1314 Napoleon Avenue is arguably the most unique and luxurious condominium conversion in Uptown New Orleans with an equally intriguing history.
Centrally located between the downtown area of the city and Audubon Park St. Elizabeth’s is a 47,000 square feet three-story brick edifice consisting of three buildings which boasts the largest cluster of Second Empire design architecture in New Orleans and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The central portion was designed and built by Thomas Mulligan for the Daughters of Charity in 1865 to function originally as a girls’ boarding school and then a girls’ orphanage. In 1880 the Prytania Street Wing was added and between 1883-1885 architect, Albert Diettel enlarged the structure by adding the Perrier Street Wing and a mansard roof.
In 1989 the orphanage moved to Marrero and St. Elizabeth’s was put on the market for sale. In 1993 renowned author and New Orleans native, Anne Rice purchased the property as a private residence and added the exterior angels on either side of the main entrance. In the early 2000s this KFK Group acquired St. Elizabeth for the purposes on condo conversion. The project was completed in 2004 transforming the former orphanage into twenty-eight distinct condominiums and five newly constructed town homes with shared amenities including a beautiful pool and patio area.
The Chapel (#16) is a stunningly renovated 5000 square foot condo with 24-ft-high vaulted ceilings flanked by 17-ft stained glass windows and hardwood floors throughout. Light pours into the open plan living room, dining room and gourmet kitchen with Thermador appliances, Berloni cabinets, jeweled, mirror finishes, Caesarstone countertops, a butlers pantry and wine room. A centered two-story tower houses master bedroom with en suite bath, heated mirrors and 16-jet shower on the first floor, two bedrooms with full baths on the second floor. Just off the tower is a screening room or study with a blood-red tiled full bath. Amenities include beautiful pool with two assigned parking spaces.
